Atatürk Barajı is the third largest dam in the world. Locally referred to as the “sea”, the 48,700,000,000 cubic meters of water held within its reservoir stand to represent the staggering ability of our constructed-objects to alter the environment. Such is the scale of this process, the dam has affected local seismic activity and hydrological cycles such as the drying of the Euphrates river.
Referencing the rock-filled construction of the dam, a series of water basins have been placed on the Belören shoreline of Atatürk Barajı. The tops of the basins mark the water-level of the reservoir at its peak. Installed during low level, the basins were filled by hand - artificially elevating the water table. When left empty through evaporation, the rising dam at its peak will flood the containers - this cycle is ongoing.
